PM Shehbaz, CDF Munir hold meetings with US secretary of state, Azerbaijan president on sidelines of the WEF

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir on Thursday held informal meetings with various world leaders on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister office, the two met with the Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

The US President Donald Trump also delivered speech to the world leaders present at the WEF, which was held in the US on Wednesday as well, attended by PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir.

It is a three-day trip by the premier to the Swiss town (between January 20-22) and he is leading a high level delegation.

The prime minister gave a breakfast speech at the Pakistan Pavilion at the WEF in Davos on Wednesday. In the speech, he added that Pakistan could only go forward through export-led growth.

In his speech, the premier stated that Pakistan is proceeding with a sense of accomplishment and direction as there has been a decline in the rate of inflation and a decrease in policy rates.

Another meeting was the premier and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

He also undertook to brief Georgieva on the positive change in the macroeconomic indicators in Pakistan, its stabilisation process and institutional reforms progress.

The statement further emphasised that PM Shehbaz insisted on fiscal discipline, the mobilisation of revenue and sustainable development in Pakistan.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa had also held an encounter with the prime minister at the World Economic forum in Davos.

Tuesday saw the premier arrive in Davos. On the X page, PM Shehbaz posted that he was going to Davos to foster the Pakistani participation in the WEF with the global trade and investment partners.
