government of Australia has announced a temporary reduction in fuel tax to provide relief to motorists facing sharply rising petrol prices بسبب ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the fuel excise will be cut in half for three months after consultations with state and territory leaders to address supply concerns and price hikes.
Currently, Australia charges about 52 cents per litre in fuel tax, which will now be reduced by 50%. Officials estimate the move will cost the government around $1.75 billion.
Albanese said the decision was taken to ease financial pressure on citizens, adding that authorities are working to ensure fuel shipments continue despite disruptions. He noted that shortages in some rural areas are mainly due to panic buying and logistical challenges.
To further reduce demand, states like Victoria and Tasmania have introduced free public transport, while citizens have been urged to limit unnecessary travel.
Meanwhile, in New South Wales, officials reported that several petrol stations have run out of fuel, particularly affecting regional communities. Authorities have warned that additional measures could be introduced if the situation worsens.
The government also plans to support fuel imports by backing new shipments and reducing costs for transport companies through lower road user charges for heavy vehicles.
Recent data shows Australia currently has around 39 days of petrol supply and 30 days of diesel reserves, while fuel prices have surged significantly in recent weeks.
